When Discovery Migrations Become Business Critical

Many organisations assume replacing one discovery platform with another is a straightforward technical exercise.

Discovery migrations often represent one of the highest-risk activities within IT operations. Discovery tools feed critical operational data into the CMDB, software asset management platforms, service models, automation workflows, and reporting systems. Any loss of accuracy or duplication of data can quickly undermine confidence across multiple teams.

This was the challenge facing a federal reserve bank when it decided to retire ServiceNow Discovery and migrate to BMC Discovery.

The organisation needed to replace its existing discovery capability across storage, on-premise infrastructure, private cloud, and multi-cloud environments while maintaining operational continuity and preserving the integrity of the ServiceNow CMDB.

Complicating matters further, the entire migration needed to be completed within a strict 40-day licence renewal window.

The project delivered measurable operational and financial outcomes:

40 Days

Migration completed within the licence renewal window.

Bespoke Functionality

Custom enhancements enabled BMC Discovery data to support ServiceNow SAMPro requirements.

99.9% Data Accuracy

CMDB integrity maintained throughout migration and validation.

Over £1 Million in Costs and Inefficiencies Eliminated

The organisation realised significant operational savings while reducing the risk associated with inaccurate configuration data.

The Challenge

The bank faced three significant challenges:

1. A Compressed Delivery Timeline

The migration needed to be completed before the ServiceNow Discovery licence renewal date, leaving only 40 days available for planning, configuration, testing, migration, and validation.

2. Large Volumes of Existing CMDB Data

Years of operational activity had created a substantial volume of configuration item data within the ServiceNow CMDB.

Any migration activity carried the risk of introducing duplicate records, breaking relationships, or creating inconsistencies between discovery sources.

3. Inconsistent Naming Conventions

Like many large enterprises, the organisation had multiple naming standards, data sources, and operational teams contributing to the CMDB.

Without careful alignment, the new discovery platform could easily have created duplicate assets and conflicting records.

Why Bespoke Configuration Was Essential

One of the most common misconceptions surrounding discovery migrations is that the out-of-the-box integration between BMC Discovery and ServiceNow will automatically deliver accurate results.

In practice, every environment is different.

Data structures evolve over time. Naming conventions vary. Asset identification methods differ between organisations. What works successfully in one environment may introduce significant duplication and reconciliation issues in another.

For this reason, TekWurx determined that a bespoke integration approach was the safest and most effective route to delivery.

The team analysed how assets were stored within the ServiceNow CMDB, how configuration items were uniquely identified, and how discovery data would need to be reconciled against existing records.

This analysis enabled TekWurx to customise the BMC Discovery to ServiceNow synchronisation process, ensuring complete alignment between both platforms before migration activity commenced.

How TekWurx Delivered

TekWurx worked closely with operational stakeholders and data consumers throughout the project.

A phased validation process ensured teams could begin testing as soon as discovery data became available, reducing risk and accelerating user acceptance.

By combining technical expertise with a pragmatic delivery approach, TekWurx was able to complete the migration within the available licence window while maintaining complete confidence in the quality of the CMDB data.

Key Takeaway

Discovery migrations are not simply technology replacement projects.

They are data trust projects.

The success of any BMC Discovery and ServiceNow integration depends on ensuring the data entering the CMDB aligns with the way the organisation stores, identifies, and manages its assets.

A bespoke configuration approach may require additional planning upfront, but it remains the safest way to protect CMDB accuracy, maintain stakeholder confidence, and avoid the operational disruption that inaccurate data can create.

“In 2026, any team integrating BMC Discovery with a ServiceNow CMDB will absolutely require a bespoke configuration to ensure data alignment.”
